The royal burgh of Whithorn is slightly further afield, home to Whithorn Trust Visitor Centre and Whitton Priory musuem, as well as the first Christian church recorded in Scotland in 397 AD, built by St Ninian. St Ninian's Cave is around four miles from Whithorn Priory, a small and secluded sea cave and the destination of an annual Christian pilgrimage, while the botanical garden of Galloway House Gardens, can be found on Wigtown Bay, offering 50 acres of parkland to discover. Newton Stewart is famous for its trout and salmon fishing, and is well-placed for discovering the wonderful countryside of the Machars to the south and scenic walking and cycling trails through forest and parkland, as well as many opportunities to see wildlife at Galloway Forest Park to the north.
