The property

Alton 2.5 miles, Winchester 16 miles, Alresford 9.5 miles, Farnham 11.9 miles, Guildford 21.9 miles. 3 Malthouse Cottages is a beautiful property in Chawton, Hampshire. Chawton is one of the prettiest and most unspoilt villages in Hampshire and is set within the northern borders of the South Downs National Park. It is the chocolate box village where Jane Austen lived and worked, completing and publishing all six of her celebrated novels, including Pride and Prejudice. The property itself is a Grade II Listed period cottage of great charm situated in the heart of historic Chawton and was originally part of a malthouse, later adapted into cottages by Edward Knight of the Knight family. The cottage is full of character with fireplaces and brick floors, leaded light windows, latch doors, original timber floorboards, and beautiful period beams. The accommodation has a comfortable and homely feel and is tastefully decorated. It features a dining room and sitting room, both with attractive brick fireplaces. Upstairs, there are three double bedrooms (two with double beds and one with a single that can be extended to a double), along with a bathroom that includes a roll top bath. The garden is a lovely aspect of the property, with a pergola and seating area positioned at the rear, and the cottage has beautiful views over the rolling Chawton countryside. An optional annex is available at an additional cost, offering space for two guests and featuring a freestanding bath, please enquire if you’d like to include the annex in your stay. Malthouse Cottage was once home to William Goodchild, a local thatcher, and his wife Mary, who worked as a servant for Frank and Mary Austen – Jane Austen’s brother and niece. The village is home to Jane Austen's House and Museum – a Grade I listed building with a charming garden – as well as to Chawton House (where Jane's brother lived), now a heritage site open to visitors, all within walking distance of the cottage, as is the local pub and café. The village also has a welcoming community with a church, 'The Greyfriars' pub, and a café. Nearby attractions include Gilbert White’s Museum and the woodland trails of Alice Holt Forest. The surrounding countryside provides ample opportunity for a number of country pursuits, as well as visiting Winchester and the beautiful market town of Alresford. The hosts live nearby in Chawton Rectory, a property rich in Austen connections and formerly owned by Reverend Papillon, who was once considered a potential suitor for Jane. Guests with an interest in local history are welcome to visit the hosts for a coffee and conversation about Chawton’s literary heritage. Whether you're marking a literary milestone or simply seeking a peaceful retreat, Malthouse Cottage offers a timeless escape in one of Hampshire’s most picturesque and historically rich villages.
