From the cottage a private track takes you to the beach area and jetty. Here you can sit and watch the swans and steamers go by or take to the water if you have a paddleboard or canoe light enough to carry the 400 metres down to the lakeshore. There are some lovely walks direct from the cottage door, particularly notable is Orrest Head which commands superb views over the lake and surrounding fells. For keen hikers there is a wide selection of classic Lakeland fell walks within very easy reach by car, including the Langdale Pikes, Helm Crag, the Fairfield Horseshoe and Scafell Pike. There are many popular attractions in the local area such as Lake Cruises, The World of Beatrix Potter, Dove Cottage (the Lakeland home of William Wordsworth) and numerous National Trust properties including Wray Castle, Townend and Hill Top.
