Summary
The cottage is well-equipped, cosy, and ideally located for exploring the area. Guests appreciated the peaceful setting and nearby activities, though some noted steep stairs and limited mobility access. Several minor issues, such as a faulty woodburner and unclear recycling instructions, were mentioned.
The property
Capel Bangor 2 miles. A beautifully converted, Grade II listed former miner’s cottage, with views across the River Rheidol up towards the wooded valley, near the village of Capel Bangor. Just a short drive from Aberystwyth, a popular university town with a striking Victorian promenade, pier and funicular railway, the cottage is a perfect base for small families or couples to enjoy both the valleys and beaches of West Wales. The cottage is set over two floors, with a landing-style attic room housing twin beds and a bunk room on the ground floor, along with a shower room. The original cottage boasts a spacious dining room and a well-equipped galley kitchen, and the sitting room is stylish and modern, with a welcoming woodburner and lovely views stretching up the hillside, a perfect spot to sit and enjoy a morning cup of tea. Outside, you can sit on the patio and enjoy the tranquillity of the area, lulled by the babble of the river. Alternatively, take your drink over to the river paddock and sit with a picnic by the owners’ stretch of fishing river, as you while away the hours in the sunshine. The area is criss-crossed with beautiful walks and is perfect for cycling, and six and a half miles away is Bwlch Nant yr Arian on the edge of the Cambrian Mountains, where hundreds of majestic red kites feed daily. The Rheidol Hydro Scheme is two miles away, and the Cwmrheidol Butterfly House is a mile and a half away, just a stone’s throw from the Rheidol Reservoir. Aberystwyth and the regency harbour town of Aberaeron, are within easy reach, along with the stunning sandy beaches of Cardigan Bay. A short drive will open up the wilderness of Wales and the Cambrian Mountains and Snowdonia National Park, meaning you're perfectly situated to explore this wonderfully diverse landscape. The area offers various outdoor activities, such as fishing and wildlife spotting, while a myriad of cycle ways and footpaths provide the opportunity to glimpse the area’s industrial history, with steam trains, funicular railways and dams. You are also close to the Wales Coastal Path, stretching in both directions from Aberystwyth. Steeped in legend, the mystical Devil’s Bridge Falls is just a six-mile drive, or you can take the fabulous Rheidol Steam Railway from Aberystwyth, from a stop just a short walk from the cottage. Penlon is a peaceful valley retreat for groups to enjoy the tranquil riverside, local beaches and diverse countryside of West Wales.
