The property

This unique former wheelhouse is a fabulous semi-detached cottage sitting on the Barton village green alongside the babbling Barton Beck, a beautiful location for a peaceful countryside getaway with friends. This charming abode was built in the 1850s, and maintains traditional character with many original features of the former wheelhouse․ It is the inspiration for the illustration by the famous artist Rodney Matthews, entitled 'The Retreat'. The features include a spectacular beamed ceiling, and parts of the original workings, adding to the immense charm and quirkiness of this homely cottage. The open-plan living space features a well-equipped kitchen, dining area and sitting area with stylish sofas, a woodburning stove, and TV, all tastefully furnished with contemporary styling․ Featuring original character with exposed beams, this room is perfect for a snug winter's night enjoying a hearty meal and unwinding with a glass of wine by the fire. Retire to the ground-floor master bedroom, boasting en-suite facilities, or choose the first-floor king-size room․ The upstairs room is home to a fabulous 'secret window' which overlooks the living space, as well as intimate sloped ceilings, and airy Velux windows. Spend a relaxing Friday night letting a hot bubble bath soothe your muscles in the family bathroom, or let the spacious shower refresh your mind first thing in the morning. Enjoy a stroll along the nearby stream, listening to the flowing beck on a tranquil afternoon, or visit the nearby Roman ruins in Piercebridge․ The more energetic can take advantage of the many walks available in this attractive area including the renowned Teesdale Way, just a mile from the cottage. Not far from the property is a well-stocked, friendly village shop for you to pick up all your essentials on your self-catered stay, as well as a lovely country pub where you can enjoy an ice cold pint. A short drive away is the fascinating market town of Barnard Castle, with its cobbled streets, quaint alleyways, The Bowes Museum of Art and of course, its dramatic castle which you can explore. Beautiful Raby Castle, the National Railway Museum, Richmond and the High Force waterfall are popular attractions which can be found nearby. With the nearby Yorkshire Dales to explore and the North Pennines leading to the Lake District there is much to be discovered in the wider area. The Wheelhouse offers a unique experience for a small family or group of friends looking to uncover a peaceful Yorkshire retreat.
