Gateside is an ideal base from which to explore all that the North York Moors and the surrounding area have to offer. There are many local walks and cycle rides, or you can take a journey on the North Yorkshire Moors steam railway through the stunning National Park countryside to the coast. The North Yorkshire coast is also within reach by car or bus, including the bustling seaside towns of Whitby and Scarborough (around 20 miles), as is the medieval walled city of York (around 30 miles). Other local attractions include Dalby Forest (a designated Dark Sky Discovery site), Flamingo Land Theme Park and Zoo, Castle Howard, Rievaulx Abbey, Helmsley Castle and Walled Garden, and the Cleveland Way. There is a pub in the village and a wide variety of shops and supermarkets in the market town of Pickering just 4 miles away.
