Summary

The property is well-located near Edinburgh with plenty of parking and cozy accommodations. However, some amenities need updating, including a low sofa, unreliable heating, and occasional issues with water temperature. WiFi quality and instructions could be improved. Overall, it's a pleasant place to stay.

The property

An endearing, traditionally-styled mid-terrace cottage, sitting within the quaint unified town of Cockenzie and Port Seton, Turret Cottage is the perfect property for a couple or small family looking to be close to Edinburgh, East Lothian's golf courses and the charming towns of Scotland's East Coast. Offering a homely base from which to create everlasting memories with your loved ones, there's no better place to celebrate any special occasion. Head in through the hallway from the ancient cobbled courtyard where you can park. Along the corridor and up a few steps you will find the sitting room, where a door leads out onto a small patio. Settle down on the sitting room sofa and unwind in the evening in front of the TV with an electric fire for additional heating, soaking up your surroundings of a traditional and regally-themed interior. The sitting room looks out on to the listed gardens of Cockenzie House and the trees where Bonnie Prince Charlie's soldiers ate from after the Battle of Prestonpans. Along the corridor, still on the ground floor, there is a spacious twin bedroom again looking out on to the gardens. Next door is the modest kitchen/diner decorated in neutral hues, this room holds every essential for your dining requirements including an electric oven and hob, microwave and fridge, along with a washing machine. Also on this floor is the bathroom where you can indulge in a relaxing soak after a day of adventure before snuggling up in bed. On the first floor sits the double bedroom, also looking out onto the listed gardens, and perfect for the couple in the group with its own en-suite shower room. Spend your mornings sitting out on the patio with your morning coffee in hand, or spend time playing with the little ones on the lawn and under the ancient apple trees before heading out to explore your surroundings.
The property benefits from sitting within the complex of Cockenzie House and Gardens, dating back to the 17th Century with its ancient trees, Victorian follies and rich heritage. There is a café on site offering speciality coffee, full breakfast, lunch and a selection of cakes. The John Muir way is literally a 30 second walk away, you join it at the 'Boat Shore' as it is known locally, which was the original natural harbour for the village. This is a fantastic place to enjoy some of the most beautiful sunsets. Cockenzie House & Gardens is a community hub so check out the Facebook page or ask the Housekeeper – there is often a fair or market taking place in the grounds. Check out the gift shop, too! To the West, you can find Scotland's capital of Edinburgh, offering shopping experiences like no other, astounding architecture, museums and plenty of bars and eateries to indulge in, not to mention the unmissable Edinburgh Castle and Royal Mile; promising excitement for all of the family. If you don't wish to drive, there is regular bus service which takes you into the centre of the city within the hour. To the East, a drive along the coast will take you past Gosford House (a great place for a walk), and through the enchanting villages of Aberlady and Gullane. Carry on and you will find yourself in North Berwick. This beautiful seaside town is a must – visit the famous Seabird Centre, great independent shops and award winning restaurants. In easy reach of both stunning coastal and countryside lands, Turret Cottage is the perfect base for your family retreat to Scotland.
