At dusk keep a look out for the otter watched by the kingfisher and marvel at the aerobatics of the bats. From the modern living space look out to the hills north and south and be tempted. Adventure welcomes you every morning in Langholm – take an early morning swim in the river 20 yeards from the front door. It will be cold but invigorating (but only when the river is low) before dashing back inside for a lovely hot shower in one of our new bathrooms. Use one of the mountain bikes from the shed for a scenic cycle by the Tarras River Valley or for the more daring, ride the beautiful moorland road to Newcastleton watching out for the herds of wild goats with kids in the Springtime. Langholm lies on coast to coast cycle routes and is blessed with quiet roads and varied circuits which are every biker’s or cyclist’s dream. At Newcastleton you will also find one of the 7stanes mountain bike centres. Langholm is at the centre of a wonderful natural environment so check out the events hosted by the newly created Tarras Valley Nature Reserve and volunteer to plant a tree. Or, trek that bit further to explore the scenic wonders of Northumberland National Park including the Kielder Observatory a magical and unique visitor attraction where night time stories come to life. This area is full of history so spread out our maps in comfort on the dining table to plan your expeditions to roman forts, prehistoric trails, Queen Victoria’s hunting lodge, castles and local stately homes. Soak up the local history by visiting Hermitage Castle where Mary Queen of Scots dallied with Darnley or the beautiful triangular Caelaverock Castle on the stunning Dumfrieshire coast. The roman wall is a must as is the city of Carlisle with its imposing castle, gruesome history of the Border Reivers and mediaeval streets. On Esk Brae’s door step you can have a go at bowling at the Old Town bowling club where visitors are always welcome or get a permit to fish in the Esk 20 yards from the front door! Fancy a spot of golf then head up the hillside to Langholm’s own 8 hole course. If theatre is your thing then don’t miss out on the Buccleugh Centre where there is something for everyone from lunch to a pre-theatre meal before one of the many varied events throughout the year. Later if you still have energy, head out to experience the dark sky and glimpse the aurora borealis. Eskbrae is ideal for cosy evenings in front of the flaming fire. While dinner cooks in the state of the art kitchen with its modern appliances, get lost in a story on the Smart TV before chatting over the day’s adventures around the dining table sharing a drink from Langholm’s own brewery. On warmer evenings, enjoy your culinary creations in the outdoor dining area, or settle down with a glass in the summer house. When sleep calls relax into one of our sumptuously comfortable beds, king-size, double or twin to transport you to your dreams and be lulled to sleep by the sound of the river and night birds.
