There are numerous footpaths from the doorstep and the Cleveland Way is less than 500m away with an abundance of scenic walking routes and cycle hire and designated trails for all capabilities are available from the nearby Sutton Bank Visitor Centre. Visit the Gliding Club at the top of the bank for a trial lesson and soar above the National Park or try some clay shooting and off road driving at Yorkshire Outdoors in Felixkirk. Visit stately homes at Castle Howard and Nunnington Hall, abbey ruins at Rievaulx and Byland, and the World Heritage Site at Fountains Abbey. Take a steam train from Pickering to Whitby or enjoy a day at the races available in Thirsk, Ripon and York. The town of Thirsk can be reached in a short drive and offers numerous shops and inns serving local produce and traditional ales, along with the impressive Georgian buildings and a cinema. It is also home to the James Herriot Museum which showcases the work of the town’s own famous vet and author. Adding to your sight-seeing itinerary is the quaint town of Harrogate where you can explore the Valley Gardens or enjoy a meal at one of the many restaurants or pubs.
