National Trust owned Hardcastle Crags and Gibson Mill are worth a visit, especially when the Blue Pig is open, or climb the steep cobbled road to historic Heptonstall with the ruins of a mediaeval church and the graveyard where Sylvia Plath is buried. Ted Hughes’ family lived here for generations and much of his poetry was inspired by the area. Continue the literary theme in Haworth, home to the Bronte sisters with the Parsonage museum and a statue immortalising the sisters and their contribution to literature. Halifax boasts the Grade I Georgian Piece Hall where hand loom weavers went to sell the “pieces” they produced, or take the kids to Eureka, the children’s interactive museum which is nearby.
